My School Year: 2011-12
For this freshman school year I have learned that MIAD isn’t full of people who are knowledgable about composition or think of it while creating, many people seemingly just do because it’s what they want to do as a creative outlet. Which is beautiful at times, but I necessarily see the “art for art’s sake” movement here, instead there’s this huge line of conceptual thinkers and then kids who just draw. There’s very few that I have come across with discontent grins, they willow around the corners separated in classes with these conceptual artists from Chicago who think highly of themselves or next to a Conchordia student, no pun intended. I did not achieve my full potential my freshman year because I was enrolled into Research, Practice and Method (RPM) classes that I did not specifically sign up for, but as a contemporary artists I perceived this as an obstacle at what I could possibly do with certain classes. Unfortunately I came across very conceptual teachers who in return did not help me gain my identity, instead during critiques I was being told why my projects should be bigger or weren’t thought of enough. Composition seems to be overlooked vastly, even through the tethers, but I also think that composition cannot truly be taught because everyone sees in a different way, yet it’s helpful towards the principle of design and visual elements but again, I guess we are not all designers, but I think composition is very helpful for others to achieve thoroughness.
2011-12 has been a fast year, I came around many different people who specialize in different mediums, i’m very excited to see what our class holds because we are a huge array of different people and the fact that we all seem similar helps me feel better that this isn’t a class that will stray away at each other. I’ve learned processes here mostly, which is what I think foundations year should be, because you have many kids that are coming into art school generally uninformed about art history and composition. Thus, only processes should be a main element to foundations year. I am not taking much more than processes with me back home and on my way back here.
